Amniocentesis training model

Advancing skills in pre-natal diagnosis in high-risk pregnancies.

In April 2023, two amazing Obstetricians and Gynecologists from Kyiv and Zaporizhzhya spent a month at Yale New Haven Hospital, Connecticut, USA.

Amniocentesis, a new technique they learned, is now implemented for Ukrainian postgraduate trainees. Amniocentesis is a procedure during which amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus in the uterus is collected and analyzed for genetic signatures or fetal lung maturity.

Dr. Polyakova invented a homemade simulation model with cooked macaroni and gel where macaroni serves as umbilical cord (should be avoided!) and gel serves as amniotic fluid (should be “collected”).

This is a great practice model for the training physicians. This training can be applied to blood sampling in cases of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome from within the vessel (macaroni).
